LAST WEEK'S QUESTION: It is said that during the plague of the 18th century,
four grave robbers were arrested in Marseilles, France. They were believed
to have been
protected from the plague by an aromatic concoction of their own invention.
After their arrest, their lives were spared in return for divulging the recipe
for their miraculous potion, which was believed to repel insects, the main
carriers of the plague.
LAST WEEK'S ANSWER: Four Thieves Vinegar
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: The following statement was first published in 1899
in a book authored by an entrepreneur who was once committed to an insane asylum
by her own daughter:
"In this progressive and aggressive age, it is a singular fact that the art
of the perfumer has not fundamentally changed, and it is greatly to be doubted
if our oils and pomades today excel the precious ointments of Araby the blest,
hundreds of years back. We still are obliged to catch the odor of a bloom
in fat, and to distill our choicest perfumes from these heavily
flower-impregnated pomades as they are termed."
Be the first to provide the name of the author of the above, and win a selection
of unique packaging supplies from HBN member The Packaging Goddess!

3. HANDMADE BEAUTY PRODUCT REVIEW by Donna Maria
I've been to Texas a few times, mostly flying through Dallas to get somewhere
else. Texas is a nice state and I can think of tons of reasons to move
there. First, there's
lots of open space in Texas so one doesn't feel confined. Second, I love
roses and I hear there are lots of yellow ones in Texas. Third, one of my
dearest friends and the
person who introduced me to the power of essential oils in skincare products
lives in Texas. But the all time, most riveting reason to move to Texas is
so I can do chores
for Maggie Hanus in exchange for bars of her new line of handmade "Wild
Soaps".
That's right, I have 3 new reasons to move to Texas: Wild Grain Soap,
Revival Soap and Serenity Soap, all made by hand by Maggie Hanus of "Of The
Earth Soapworks" in Austin, Texas. All 3 soaps possess the 5 most
important basic soap requirements: (1) rich, non-drying lather; (2) great smell;
and (3) attractive packaging and color; (4) nothing in it to scratch my skin;
and (5) truthful and informative labels. On all 4 points, these soaps are
tops! I'll be reviewing each one separately in the next 3 issues.
Ooops, gotta go 'cuz it's time to bathe again ... I'm in the middle of
Wild Grain Soap. Maggie's soaps can be purchased at www.oftheearthsoapworks.com.

5. SKINFORMATION ~ Introduction To Ayurveda: Part 1 of 5
I am pleased to introduce today the first in a 5-part Skinformation series on
Ayurvedic skincare. Carina Chatlani of Body Bistro shares from her
experiences incorporating
natural ingredients into skincare products formulated using ancient Ayurvedic
principles.

YOUR BODY, YOUR TEMPLE
What is Ayurveda?
The term "Ayurveda" is derived from the Sanskrit root "Ayus"
meaning "life" and "Veda" referring to the
"knowledge" or "science of". Originating in India over
6000 years ago, Ayurveda represents the "Science of Life". As
its name suggests, Ayurveda represents a holistic system of medicine.
The Ayurvedic approach requires that we think of ourselves as whole beings,
body, mind and soul, integrated with the earth on which we live and the air we
breathe. This concept is the very essence of the ancient Vedic Medical
literature written in Sanskrit many thousands of years ago.
Fundamentally, Ayurveda believes in the concept of five elements including
space, air, fire, water and earth.(1) Each element corresponds to portions of
the human body. All five elements are present on the cellular level.
Every cell has a mind, intelligence and consciousness.
Ancient civilizations separated neither body from mind, nor mind from soul -
thus creating what we can consider an interconnected molecular mass. Based
on the principles of healing and rejuvenation, the plants used in Ayurveda for
cosmetics and skin care also perform medicinal and purifying actions.
Our Skin Reflects Our Inner State of Health
The health of our inner life manifests itself quite often in the appearance of
our skin. On-going atmospheric influences may lead to dullness and early
aging of the skin, but effective management of our inner lives often leads to
outward beauty and radiance. According to Ayurveda, if one wishes to be
radiant, one must reverse harmful thoughts, work through emotional blocks, and
discontinue bad habits.
The frantic pace of everyday life and the onset of computer technology have
changed our lifestyles so dramatically that we often neglect our mental,
physical and spiritual health. Thankfully, Ayurveda can be tailored to
individual needs and requirements,
promoting self-discovery and self-knowledge. By encouraging us to look at
the results of choices we make with respect to diet, work and relationships,
Ayurveda can help restore balance to life.

6. AROMATIC BEAUTY FOOD RECIPE ~ Every Skin Face & BodyMask
This recipe makes enough mask for 2 to 3 full body mask treatments. Cut it
in half and give some to a friend!
Ingredients
7 ounces kaolin (China clay) or bentonite clay
8 ounces Every Skintea (see recipe in our 7/30/00 issue)
1 ounce plain yogurt
1/2 ounce liquid honey
1/2 ounce jojoba oil
4 drops clary sage essential oil
20 drops mandarin essential oil
10 drops rosewood essential oil
Blending Procedure
Measure the clay and set aside. Mix the liquid ingredients together in a
separate container until the yogurt and honey are completely dissolved.
Begin stirring the liquid ingredients with a hand held electric mixer on low
speed. Add the clay a small portion at a time and mix until a soft,
spreadable paste is formed. Add essential oils (optional) last and stir
well to combine. Massage gently over clean face, neck and entire body if
desired. Allow mask to dry for about 15 minutes. Rinse well with
warm
water and follow with a favorite moisturizer.
*Submit your recipe to recipes@handmadebeauty.com.
