4. HANDMADE BEAUTY PRODUCT REVIEW by Jennifer
~ Balancing Facial Toner from Scents of Balance
4 oz ~ $12
Upon receiving Balancing Facial Toner from Scents of Balance, my first reaction was that it had a very strong
aroma. Because I work in a fragrance-free environment, this
was initially a concern, but I used it before work the next day and polled my polled co-workers to see how they liked it.
All responses were totally positive! One said it smelled clean and fresh, like summertime. I quickly became
accustomed to the aroma and look forward to using the product. The herbal smell (calendula, chamomile, fennel, eucalyptus,
peppermint, lavender) soothes my skin as well as my mood. I suffer from clinical depression and chronic pain but I
always feel better after using this toner!
I also have OILY skin that never seems to feel clean. Normally, when I try a new product, my skin responds
initially, but later returns quickly to its original oily state. After using this for almost 2 months, my skin
feels free of excess oil longer without feeling stripped.
It really does Balance just like it promises! I love this stuff!
I like the blue plastic bottle because I don't have to worry about dropping it, or packing it carefully when I
travel. There's also just something special about cobalt blue bottles. You can purchase Scents of Balance products at
www.scentsofbalance.com.
5. SKINFORMATION ~ SEASONAL INFLUENCES ON THE SKIN
I am pleased to continue the series on Ayurvedic skincare. HBN member Carina Chatlani of Body Bistro shares from her
experiences incorporating natural ingredients into skincare products formulated using ancient Ayurvedic principles.
As we move from summer into fall, how fitting that this week's article focuses on the influence of the seasons over the
doshas. (For information doshas, see HBC 8/20/00.)
^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*
The seasons can aggravate and therefore affect the body and the skin in numerous
ways.
The Six Seasons
~Kapha becomes imbalanced in early winter (December/January) with feelings of overall chilliness, oversleeping and
procrastination. When winter sets in (January/February)
food is more easily digested than in the summer months. Hot oil massage with moisturizers containing one or a
combination of the botanicals, Neem, Sandalwood, Rose or Carrot Oil is highly recommended during both of these
winter seasons.
~Vata becomes imbalanced in late winter (March/April). If one takes action to balance irritated Vata, body tissues and
processes function properly, elimination is regular, energy is high, sleep is sound, clarity and alertness are at their
peak, and immune functions are significant.
~Kapha decreases in spring (May/June). It is best to avoid heavy and fatty foods and increase exercise and aromatherapy.
Facial scrubs or body masks containing Sandalwood are effective during this season.
~Pitta tends to accumulate from July to September due in part to weakness of digestion. The sun and wind create a cooling
effect. Pitta imbalance reveals itself in the form of excess body heat, easily developing fevers, infections, and other
inflammatory conditions, skin disorders, heartburn, weak digestion, inadequate sleep, anger, and irritability.
~Pitta and Kapha Doshas are most aggravated in the fall (Oct/Nov/Dec). It is recommended that herbal tea or fruit juice
be consumed before and after exercise. As early winter approaches, Pitta and Kapha interchange.
Ingredients which are recommended for Radiant Skin
Ayurveda recommends that one's skin care regime correspond with the needs of one's dominant dosha.
[Key: Common Name-Latin Name- [Sanskrit Name]
Gotu Kola-Centella Asiatica- [Brahmi].
This herb decreases pitta and kapha. When applied on the skin it can cause dilatation of the vessels and increase the
blood circulation. It has been used to heal and cleanse
the abnormal skin conditions like eczema in which pitta is aggravated.
Neem - Melia Azidrachta- [Nimba].
Neem helps decrease Kapha and Pitta. Neem leaf powder is used as a paste to heal and cleanse. The decoction of
leaves is effective in eczema and other pitta dominant skin conditions. Neem oil is used in alopecia and premature
graying of hair.
Sandalwood- Santalum Album- [Chandan].
Sandalwood oil is excellent for all seasons and helps to decrease Kapha and Pitta by suppressing body heat. It also
improves the complexion of the skin and provides a soothing effect on inflammatory skin conditions.
Turmeric - Curcuma Longa - [Haridra].
Haridra means, "that which can improve the skin's complexion". Tumeric decreases Kapha and Vata. It is anti-inflammatory,
antibacterial, and heals and cleanses the wounds. It has been shown to exert significant antioxidant activity which
can improve the skin's complexion.

6. AROMATIC BEAUTY FOOD RECIPE ~ MANGO MUG MASK
Mango mug mask is a perfectly simple and delightful way to use the last bit of fresh, plump mango from the summer.
Ingredients
1/4 medium sized mango (eat the rest of course!)
4 tablespoons combined finely ground oats and almonds
2 tablespoons whipping cream
Blending Procedure
Combine all ingredients together in a small food processor and process for about 1 minute until smooth and creamy.
Add a bit of distilled water or hydrosol if mixture is too
thick to spread on the skin; add some finely powdered oats if it is too runny. Pat gently over clean face and neck
skin and relax for about 15 minutes. Rinse well and follow with toner and moisturizer of choice. You can also
enjoy the lightly exfoliating action of the oats and almonds by massaging the toner lightly over your face and neck as
a soothing cleanser!
