2. HANDMADE BEAUTY TRIVIA QUESTION ~ Last week's question remains unanswered ...
lots of good guesses though. This is obviously not an easy question, so today, I
offer a hint.
Question.
Who is credited with first suggesting that cosmetics should be
separated from the practice of medicine because use of cosmetics "is not
ordinarily for treatment of an illness but something that goes outside of this
with the intention of concealment or disguise."
Here's The Hint ...
The correct person also said, "Let the surgeon take care to regulate
the whole regimen of the patient's life for joy and happiness, allowing his
relatives and special friends to cheer him, and by having someone tell him
jokes. The surgeon must forbid anger, hatred and sadness in the patient and
remind him that the body grows fat from joy and thin from sadness."
Be the first to answer and win a copy of "Natural
Beauty" by Rosemary Gladstar!

3. HANDMADE BEAUTY PRODUCT REVIEW by Donna Maria
~ Herbal Clay Masque by Aromaleigh
4 oz ~ $12.00
The first time I used this product in the shower, my
husband asked me why I was
washing my face with dirt. He has his strong
points, but appreciating how ground clay and herbs can help cleanse my skin is
not one of them. Aromaleigh's Clay Masque is a dry blend of clay and
ground herbs that you can customize to suit your particular skin care needs
using ingredients you have in your kitchen.
The
masque is available in 3 different formulas ~ oily/acneic, normal/combination
and dry/sensitive. My choice, dry/sensitive, contains white clay and rose,
calendula, and lavender. I used this in a variety of ways, not only as a masque,
but also as a cleanser either by itself or in conjunction with the creamy lather
from a favorite handmade bar of soap. For my masque, I added whipping
cream and rose hydrosol to the mix, plus one drop each of clary sage and rose
essential oil. I stirred the mixture to a paste and applied it to my clean face
and neck. I rested a bit, breathing deeply to enjoy the aromatherapy and
benefits of deep, thoughtful breathing. Then, I rinsed well to reveal my newly
nourished skin right away. Herbal Clay Masque (and lots of other great goodies)
is available from Aromaleigh at www.aromaleigh.com.
4. BEAUTY BUSINESS TIP OF THE MONTH ~
Cultivate Your Personal Entrepreneurial Style
Since HBC started in January of this year, I have received hundreds
of letters from HBC readers asking questions about steps they could take to
launch their own businesses or grow the ones they have. I have learned so much
from your questions and comments, and it has been a joy to engage in fruitful
dialogs with you about the challenges of running a small business.
This new HBC monthly feature ~ Beauty
Business Tip Of The Month ~ is designed to
share my favorite tips for growing your business, and some tips I learn from
others. If you enjoy this new HBC monthly feature, please drop me a note and let
me know!!
Cultivate Your Personal Entrepreneurial Style
While there is a great deal to be said for acquiring the
skills needed to grow a business, we often forget that mere skill is dull and
lifeless unless it is coupled with dynamic style
and personality. Copying someone else's style is a self-defeating activity
because it conveys a lack of authenticity which most people can spot a mile
away. Here are some tips for cultivating your own personal style.
1. Be Consistent With A Personal Touch.
Pick 2 or 3 things to do
regularly that add a personal touch to your business. It
could be calling at least 10 repeat customers each week to say hello and make
sure you are meeting their needs. It could also be adding a sample of a favorite
product to each order you ship. These types of activities keep you in touch with
your customers and let them know how much you value
their business.
2. Create a Mission Statement. No business should be
caught without a core mission statement. Your mission statement capsulizes your
business goals and inspires people to conduct business with you. It also
encourages people who work with and for you to conduct your business affairs in
a manner that is consistent with your mission. You will find that your mission
statement serves as a wonderful reminder of why you are in business and is a
great way to help you maintain your focus. If you ever feel like you are
spinning your wheels, working furiously but accomplishing nothing, take a moment
to re-align your activities with your mission statement.
3. Plan A Customer Appreciation Event. Of course, many of
your customers may not be able to attend, but that's OK. Invite
them anyway ... everyone loves an invitation, even if they must decline. After
the event, you can send photos to those that were unable to attend, or post them
to your Web site. Even those that weren't there will feel a part of the event
simply because you thought enough to invite them.

cultivating your personal
entrepreneurial
style? If so, send it to businesstips@handmadebeauty.com.
5. SKINFORMATION ~ Rose Hips For Awesome Skin
Today's Aromatic Beauty Food Recipe contains rose hips (Rosa
rubignosa) in 2 forms: rose hip oil and rose hip CO2. Both
contain the nutrients and brilliant red/orange color of rose hips. Rose hips CO2
is an ingredient in my CO2 Crew (featured in
"Making Aromatherapy Creams & Lotions") and is remarkably soothing
for my dry skin, not to mention the subject of many reports indicating it is
helpful to fade scar tissue. Golden Skin Rejuvenator, containing rose hips in
the two forms above, is made a lovely golden color by virtue of the rose hips
and heliocarrot.
6. AROMATIC BEAUTY FOOD RECIPE ~ Golden Skin Rejuvenator
I developed this recipe over the past few weeks, along with my
talented apprentices, Dawn Page, Jodie Rich, Joan LaFever and Peggy Fields. Dawn
wanted to make something that would help fade scars, and she's been using this
cream for a few weeks with good results. The rose hips and helichrysum may pack
a powerful punch for helping fade scar tissue, but even if you don't have scars,
this is great nourishment for dry, cracked skin. Keep this fresh, all-natural
product in the fridge to help inhibit bacterial growth and extend shelf
life. And, as always, use
a spatula *not your fingers* to dispense the product to help prevent
contamination. Enjoy!!
Phase A Ingredients
60 grams rose hydrosol (pure distilled rose water)
1 tsp. borax
Phase B Ingredients
10 grams Emerald Oil (The recipe for Emerald Oil is in my book, "Making
Aromatherapy Creams and Lotions," but you can substitute extra virgin olive
oil.)
10 grams jojoba oil
8 grams rose hip oil
2 grams heliocarrot oil
10 grams beeswax
2 grams rose hip CO2
Aromatic Oils
50 drops helichrysum essential oil
50 drops lavender essential oil

for Slow Motion Potion at
