2. Handmade Beauty Trivia Question ~ Last week's winner was Susanna Brandon of Arlington, Virginia. Susanna won a sample of pure vanilla oil (absolute).
Last Week's Question: In the 1970's, while starring as the only African American in the soap opera "Another World," this woman had no choice but to use the show's make-up, which was designed for skin that was much lighter than hers. Determined not to have a "chalky" appearance on national television, she mixed together several products from different lines to create make-up that was perfect for her chocolate-caramel colored skin. She now owns a successful make-up and cosmetics company servicing the specific skincare needs of women of color. To win this week's prize, a sample of pure vanilla oil (absolute) from Madagascar to warm your winter, be the first to provide the full name of this inspiring entrepreneur.
Last Week's Answer: Vera Moore of Vera Moore Cosmetics. I contacted Vera personally to let her know that she was the subject of HBC's trivia contest. She graciously donated the winner's choice of $50 in spa or cosmetics products as an additional prize!! Vera is a lovely lady and invites you to visit her Web site at http://www.veramoore.com.
Congratulations again Susanna ... what a bonus you get for being this week's winner!
This Week's Question: Two Stanford University grads have combined forces to create a company that will seoon be marketing an odor-emitting device that can be attached to any computer. Soon, we'll not only see and hear what's on-line, but we will smell it too for a more interactive experience. Imagine coordinating your email font and color with your favorite scent .. I can't wait!!
To win this week, state the name of the privately held company that is planning to market these devices, and the names of the 2 Stanford grads that founded the company.
This week's prize is a very special bar of luscious soap I made last month. It contains generous amounts of olive and avocado oils in the base, along with Bulgarian rose hydrosol as 100% of the water used! The soap is super-enriched with lots of shea butter and contains a delectable blend of these pure aromatic oils: rose absolute, ylang ylang, blood orange, palmarosa, myrrh, rose geranium, cinnamon bark and sandalwood. For people that love to pamper themselves only!!
Please read the contest rules at this link before submitting your entry.

Almond Flip Handmade Soap by Woodspirits
6 oz. ~ $7.50
This very generous sized bar of soap is really a handful! Woodspirits never skimps on size, and this bar is one of their biggest! A delectable soap with benzaldehyde taken from peach and cherry pits ... creates a sweet, hearty almond aroma, one of my favorite scents in a handmade soap. It seems to smell so creamy and rich, and the sweetness reminds me of marzipan of course! But perhaps the most unique thing about this bar is the almonds it contains. Not just ground almonds like I have seen in most almond soaps, but huge chunks of whole almonds as well! Not only is it visually appealing and unique, but it makes the bar heavier and more dense when held, and creates quite a unique sensation when gently rubbed across the skin. I especially liked rubbing it across my thighs in the shower for a little massage. Barbara Bobo, Woodspirits' owner, tells me that this bar is part of their "Cafe Collection," and its no wonder. If I close my eyes and sniff, I think for a moment I could shave it into my coffee cup!
Almond Flip and other time-tested Woodspirits soaps are available from HBN member Woodspirits, and you can contact them through HBN's member directory at this link: http://www.handmadebeauty.com/directory/index.asp
5. Handmade Beauty Recipe ~ True Rose Super Rich Cleanser
This week's recipe is for soapmakers who want to try something truly extraordinary. You'll need some already cured rose scented soap, plus you'll need to make a new batch of unscented soap. If you're not a seasoned soapmaker (who also does not mind splurging a bit on a real treat), this is not the recipe to start with but it's definitely something to work up to! I chose to print this recipe in this week's issue for those of you that may wish to make something truly luxurious for Valentine's Day gifts ... it's just around the corner!
Anna's True Rose Super Rich Cleanser
Ingredients
4 ounces of fully cured rose soap
4 ounces of pure rose hydrosol, warmed
4 ounces virgin coconut oil, warmed
a few tablespoons honey or cream (or both!!) (optional)
a teaspoon rose absolute (optional)
Blending Procedure
Shred the rose soap as finely as possible. Add the warmed hydrosol and coconut oil and use a blender to "whip" the mix. Add the honey or cream and stir well again to blend. Add absolute and stir again to blend. This mixture can be stored in an airtight glass container and used to clean the skin in a most luxurious way.
Sometimes, after mixing this blend together, Anna brings an additional batch of handmade soap to the trace stage (that is, to the point where it is thick enough to pour into a mold), and adds her True Rose Super Rich Cleanser (while it is still fresh) to the soap mixture. She stirs the new soap mixture a bit more to make sure the ingredients are well incorporated, and then pours it into a mold. After it sits for about 2 weeks, it's ready to cut and can be used after curing about 3 weeks or so.
This week's recipe was submitted by HBN member Anastasia Crabtree, owner of Moon and Stars Enchanted Soap. Anna is an extraordinary HBN member who makes handmade soaps and candles using the world's finest aromatic oils and waxes. She sent me this recipe which I hope to have a chance to try soon. If you don't have your own rose soap on hand for shredding, Anna's rose soap is truly exquisite. You can find it by visiting Moon and Stars Web site, listed in HBN's member directory at http://www.handmadebeauty.com/directory/index.asp.
