Last Week's

and hilarious commercial airing on network television. In the commercial, a
woman is enjoying a fabulous spa treatment. Her hair is safely tucked away
in a turban, she is covered is green mud, wrapped in a warm cocoon-like
towel, and cucumber slices are placed over her eyes. As the soothing music
plays in the background, she opens her eyes and the cukes fly off because
she has suddenly remembered that she should have taken a dose of me before
she got all wrapped up and comfy. What am I?
Last Week's Answer: Imodium (or Imodium AD)
This Week's Question: An organization named in 2001 is
devoted to educating the public about olfaction and its importance to all
areas of human psychology, behavior and quality of life.
To win this week,
be the first person to name the organization and win

4. Create The Life You Love™: The
French "Aroma" Connection, Part
II,
by Polly Fletcher
 This
week
marks the second week of a
4-part series of articles brought
to us by guest writer and HBN member Polly Fletcher of Life Balance.
Last week, we introduced you
to Polly and her quest to find a source for essential oils at the source.
This week, Polly treats us to a virtual overview of her trip to Grasse, the
perfume capital of the world.
Grasse: The Perfume Capital Of The
World
We were based in the city of Grasse in the heart of
the Cote D'Azur and the border of Provence. Grasse is nestled in a high rocky
village overlooking the Mediterranean. Grasse's popularity can be
attributed to the Queen of France, Catherine Medici, who requested scented
leather gloves that were a specialty of this area during the 16th century. After
the revolution, perfume making became the lead industry in Grasse. Now
with 30 or more perfume factories, Grasse is the place where
extracting plant essences and refining synthetic scents has become a fine art. The
climate is ideal for growing roses, jasmine, lavender, and tuberose. In
Grasse, the
early morning spring air is awash in the aroma of Roses.
We arrived during the annual Rose Expose which
provided us with a great appreciation for roses. The city is dressed in roses
and there is no shortage of vendors selling candied rose, violet, and mimosa petals, rose jams
and syrups, fresh sachets to put in your closets & drawers, floral
arrangements, and, of course, perfume. One of my favorite confections is a rose jelly from
Monsieur Hubert Biancalana's Le Domaine de Manon. At Le Domaine de Manon Rose Farm we watched women
picking roses, observed growing practices, and learned how to graft new
plants. There was a serenity that could be felt out amongst the rows of roses. The
farm produces delicious rose and jasmine jelly. Every time I use
this rose confection to make my weekly challah & sponge cake I am taken back to
this serene place. Rosa centifolia is typically used in confections while
Rosa
damescena is used for essential oil. The latter must be picked in the early
morning when the plant oils are at their peak.
A favorite source for confections is Confiserie
Florian. No matter where in the world you are, you can order their
fabulous gourmandises, including glazed fruits, toffees, marmelades, confits,
nougats and flormandes. Delicious! You'll want to stock up!!
The Perfumeries
Several perfume houses in Grasse offer excellent tours
and demonstrate distillation of plants in beautiful antique, copper
alambics. My favorite perfume houses are Molinard and Fragonard. Fragonard, in the soul of the old city, plays host to
the Rose Expose. They have an extensive museum with a collection of antique
labels, bottles, jars, flasks, distillation equipment, and old journals
holding precious blending information from the perfumers of the day. Some of my
favorite items included antique bergamot boxes and beautiful old
labels that are reminiscent of old world opulence. The antique labels lend
marvelous inspiration for packaging ideas! Fragonard is one of the few perfume factories that
touts its own independent perfumer and claims that all
its perfumes, essences, and scents are produced without synthetics. With a
collection covering 3,000 years of perfume history, Fragonard is a perfume
house well worth visiting.
Molinard is brisk 20-30 minute walk heading out of the
old city. As you enter the grounds you are greeted by an enchanting courtyard of exquisite flowers
and trees reminiscent of an old villa. Molinard
Perfumery is
famous for two exclusive fragrances. Habinita, with spicy oriental
notes created in 1924; and M de M created later with over 600 essences; a
complex perfume with a magnificent, floral arrangement. The packaging of the
perfume is of exquisite design by Lalique. These perfumes are works
of art as well as a treasured
collection items. I brought home Habanita perfume
in the Lalique bottle with the frosted nymphs in bas relief. The Concreta is
an exclusive creation that is a highly, concentrated, alcohol free form of
perfume made from the natural wax of flowers. It is a semi -- solid wax
application that is scented with either single essences or the exclusive
fragrances created by Molinard Perfumery. The lids are beautifully hand
painted in a floral design. While I purchased several, thinking they would
make great gifts, as yet, I am unable to part with them. Instead, they have been added to our showcase
collection. If you have time, Molinard
Perfumery offers fun courses with their perfumers.
If you're there in the hot summer month of August, you can count on
the Jasmine being in full bloom and, of course, a festival will be hosted in their
honor. Imagine what the morning air must smell like?
Beautiful, exquisite gardens are a way of French life,
from simple home gardens to specialty museums. Anyone planning a
trip must take time to tour some of the magnificent gardens in this region. This is certainly an excellent place to begin
an aroma journey.

Maria: Vitamin Cream by Kathleen Lewis
Vitamin Cream by Kathleen Lewis
Beauty Worldwide
2 ounces | $22.00 Vitamin Cream is
made by HBN member Kathleen Lewis Beauty Worldwide. It is a
is a very rich cream with aloe vera, sweet almond, rose hips and
lanolin contains just a tad bit of ylang ylang and orange essential oils. I
love this cream! I always use a facial cream (whether in solid or liquid
form), even in the summertime because my skin tends to dry out quickly.
Although Vitamin Cream is designed as a
night cream, I use it in the morning too. I also use it on dry patches on my
body, especially a very stubborn area on my left elbow. One night last week
after a bath, I slathered almost the entire 2 ounce container all over my
skin, paying special attention to my feet. I slept in socks to make sure I
maximized Vitamin Cream's ability to
penetrate those calloused areas that are so noticeable in sandals. Vitamin
Cream moisturizes my skin without leaving it feeling oily or
greasy and it doesn't make my pores feel clogged. I wish it came in a larger
jar so I could get more at a time. If you're lucky enough to be in the New
York area, you can buy Vitamin Cream at
Kathleen's studio. If you're farther away like me, you'll have to contact
her by phone or email: (718) 625-4052 or klewis9755@aol.com.
And while you're at it, you might want to check out Kathleen's new line of
