Report On A Fabulous Weekend!

Along with some other great speakers, I was fortunate to be invited to speak at this year's Conference of Handcrafted Soapmakers, sponsored by the Handcrafted Soapmakers Guild. What a fabulous weekend it was in beautiful, sunny, breezy Tucson, Arizona, where we enjoyed wonderful southwest cuisine (including some delicious margarita tarts) and accommodations at a beautiful resort complete with wellness center and inviting walking trails. Speakers addressed attendees on topics ranging from developing a niche market, tips on marketing handmade soaps, bulk soapmaking, incorporating aromatic and base oils into soaps and more. My topic, Cultivating An Entrepreneurial Mindset, addressed 7 ways for start-up entrepreneurs to renew their minds to achieve maximum business success -- all with the goal of creating wealth and enjoying their lives! It was very exciting and I commend the coordinators and event planners for creating such a wonderful time for all of us. For more information about the Handcrafted Soapmakers Guild, visit their Web site.

Learn more about our members and their exciting activities by visiting their Web sites through HBN's Online Member Directory, now with 4 ways to search: (1) by state/country; (2) by member business name; (3) by keyword search; or (4) using our new alphabetical listings.

3. Handmade Beauty Trivia Question
: there was no winner from last week! Stumped you again??!!

Last Week's Question: In the late 1960's and early 1970's, I was sold at cosmetics counters throughout the world, bearing the claim that I was "a facelift without surgery." Controversial ads were run in women's magazines in efforts to sell me. One of them caught the attention of the Federal Trade Commission and I was eventually pulled from department store shelves in the US. That ad showed a "before" picture of a woman prior to using me, and beside that, an "after" picture of the same woman after using me. The problem was that the "after" picture was taken after a professional application of make-up, so the ad was false and misleading. The last jar of me is believed to have been sold by Bishop Industries, Inc., sometime around the end of 1971. What is my name?

Be the first to correctly state the name of the product advertised and the manufacturer and win a jar of Muscle Relief Bath Soak, courtesy of HBN member Planet Earth Remedies

Please read the contest rules here before submitting your entry. Put "TRIVIA CONTEST ANSWER" in the subject line or your answer will not be considered.

While time does not permit me to respond personally to all entrants, the winner will be notified by email and their name posted at HBN's home page.

4. Handmade Beauty Product Review by Donna Maria: LaraBar

LaraBar
1.6 ounce bar | $1.89

As you know, I've been taking a break entirely from reviewing skincare and beauty products to review some other types of items that I think make great complements to a delicious beauty product. My first such review as for a delicious jar of Triple Strawberry Homemade Specialty Jam. If you missed that, you can enjoy it here.

This week, I'm reviewing a delicious newly introduced product called LaraBars. LaraBars are naturally tasty energy bars made by Humm Foods. They come in several varieties: Apple Pie, Cashew Cookie, Banana Cookie Dough, Chocolate Coconut Chew and Cherry Pie. I have tried them all and my hands down favorites are Cherry Pie and Cashew Cookie. Any of them are the perfect addition to a basket of pampering treats like soaps, teas, candles and such.

Like you, I have tried several bar type energy foods before. Some are dry and brittle -- not at all fun to chew. Many are made with puffed rice and corn syrup which requires that at least 8 ounces of water be on hand so I don't choke! Yet others are made with lots of fillers that are meant to fill me up without adding much nutrition. LaraBars are different.

LaraBars are made with nothing but dried fruits and nuts ... that's right, just fruits and nuts -- and sometimes a spice or two like cocoa (in Chocolate Coconut Chew) or cinnamon (in Apple Pie). Since they're just fruits and nuts, they have all the moisture needed from the nuts to stick to the fruits to form a solid bar of delicious chewy goodness. The ingredients are very finely ground so they're fun to eat ... my 17-month old daughter loves a little cut up into small pieces. They help her learn how to chew properly and nuts are of course great for babies. LaraBars are a little high on the calorie side -- usually about 200 calories with nearly half of them from fat) so I like to share them with her as a special "dessert" sometimes. (My daughter is not allergic to nuts!) Apple Pie (which I am snacking on as I write this) is made with walnuts, apples, almonds, raisins and cinnamon. Chocolate Coconut Chew has dates, almonds, walnuts, cocoa and coconut. These bars were the perfect companion for a recent out-of-town trip across the country. They looked much more appetizing than the airplane food everyone else was eating!!

You can buy LaraBars at the Humm Foods Web site. The price is right to try each one so you can pick your favorites too!
