3. Handmade Beauty
Trivia
Question: the winner of last week's
contest was Pleasant Vitali of Santa
Rosa, CA. Pleasant won an
assortment of fragrance oil samples, including Green Tweed, Sandalwood Musk and
Sweetgrass!
Last Week's
Question: Ounce for ounce, I have more antioxidant
power than green tea. I have a sweet and soft flavor and some say I smell a
bit like flowers. I am primarily produced in the Fujian
province in China and another name for me is "silver needles."
Picked during the springtime, approximately 80,000 of my shoots are needed
to produce just one pound of me for human consumption. I have recently
started to appear in beauty products and, like
any other antioxidant containing naturally occurring plant, I am believed to
be good for the skin. What am I?
Last Week's Answer: white tea
This Week's Question: I am quite an unpleasant bacteria. In
fact, I am lethal. I live in the soil and in stream and lake sediments among
other places. I cannot survive in extreme dryness or in air, but I thrive in
moist, airless environments. I am present in mixtures of oil (usually olive)
and herbs that people combine together in an innocent effort to make herbal
infusions for use in food and beauty products, and I produce a lethal
neurotoxin that can be fatal. What am I? Be
the first to correctly provide both the common and Latin
names for the above bacteria and win some Peppermint Lip Balm made by HBN member
Organic Soaps and
Balms!
Please read the contest rules here
before submitting your entry. Put "TRIVIA CONTEST ANSWER" in the subject line or your answer will
not be considered.
While time does not permit me to respond personally to all entrants, the
winner's name will announced in the next newsletter!

Handmade Beauty Product Review: Rooibos
Tea Soap

Rooibos
Tea Soap
$5.75 | 4.8 to 5 oz.
First things first. If you have been a
subscriber to this newsletter for even a short period of time, you know that
I rarely find a handmade soap that I don't enjoy. Whether made by a novice
with determination and an eye for detail or by a veteran soapmaker, I am
bound to be able to enjoy any soap that is handmade from scratch. Now that
that's out of the way, I have to say that when a seasoned soapmaker takes to
stirring, it can be an exceptional thing, and such is the case when
soapmaker (and HBN member!) Carol Ochs of Simply Soap takes her rightful
place behind a soap pot.
Rooibos Tea Soap is
one of an extraordinary line of handmade soaps that Carol whips up. Infused
with rooibos, also known as "red bush" tea, native to South
Africa, the soap is a light tan color with visible flecks of rooibos
throughout. The nice aroma is lent by cinnamon, lavender and orange
essential oils and the lather is very rich and soothing to the skin. Of all
the bars of soap in my bath, I chose this one to accompany me to the
hospital last month when I delivered my son and I'm so glad I did! It
provided a nice aroma for my room after a shower, helping to uplift the
otherwise dingy hospital scent. What's more, the staff enjoyed the smell as
it wafted outside my door, and a few times, I heard people in the hall
asking "What is that smell? It smells really good." The lucky
staff who brought me a meal or stopped by for another reason after my shower
also got an earful about the benefits of handmade soap (especially those
made by members of the Handmade Beauty Network -- "go visit our
website" of course!)
While Rooibos Tea
Soap is a fabulous bar of soap, Simply Soap has lots of other
ones that are not only well made in terms of their benefits for the skin,
but also beautiful to behold. You'll want to check out some of my favorites:
Baja Bar (poppy seeds and hemp oil along with colorful chunks of soap
surrounded by a pink base) and La Luna (mesmerizing blue and white swirls
with a rosewood/musk aroma). If I ever had the chance to return to full time
soapmaking, these and other of Simply Soap's bars would provide a heaping
amount of inspiration. But for now, I'll be happy just getting a bunch of
them as gifts for friends and family members for the holiday this year!
You can get your own Rooibos
Tea Soap and dozens of other wonderful soaps this holiday season
from Simply Soap.
Wholesale and retail are available, and you can buy soap in bulk logs or
individual bars. Individual bars are priced based on whether they are
wrapped in fabric or one of their other creative labels. My Rooibos
Tea Soap was beautifully wrapped in the "California
Sun" label. For what it's worth, the "Vine" label (pictured
above) is my personal favorite -- simple in black and neutral, yet elegant
and classic.
