4. Beauty & The Business Trivia
Question: Last week's
winner was Lucinda Frend of Greenbelt, Maryland. Lucinda won a
bar of delicious handmade soap!
Last
Week's Question: I was an inspirational figure because I
invented and patented lots of things that made my employer rich. I worked
for General Foods as a food scientist for much of my career. In 1975, while
trying to create an instant soft drink, I mixed sugar and carbon dioxide on
my tongue and ended up inventing Pop Rocks, a candy that fizzes in your
mouth like bath fizzies fizz in your tub. I also invented other food
concoctions, many of which lead to the development of everyday items like
Cool Whip and Tang drink mix. I lived quite a long life, and passed away
earlier this year. To win this week, provide my name.
Last Week's Answer:
William A. Mitchell
This Week's Question: I was born in Los Angeles. Neglected and
abused as a child, I nearly ended up in a home for mentally retarded
children when I did not utter a word or sound, even as I turned 4 years old.
I barely reacted to any stimulation. I was eventually adopted and did not
speak a word for several weeks after arriving at my adoptive family home.
When I did finally speak, it was in full and complete sentences. As a
student, I was unfocused and distracted. Teachers gave up on me, but with
love and attention provided by my new family, I eventually began to excel. I
graduated magna cum laude from Yale College with a degree in political
science, then earned a juris doctorate and master's degree from Harvard
University. Today, I am a leader in one of the country's largest and most
densely populated cities. Who am I?
Be the first to answer and win a bar of soap
made by HBN member Alabu Soap! (See my review of Alabu Soaps in this issue!)

Handmade Beauty Product Review: Handmade
Goat Milk Soaps Alabu
Soap
Handmade
Goat Milk Soaps by Alabu, Inc.
$3.65 per 3.5 ounce bar
Ahhhh! The silky smooth feel of goat milk soap ... nothing can match it!
Last week, my family and I had the pleasure of enjoying several of Alabu's
creamy, silky lather bars! Alabu's soaps are shaped in perfect hand
cut ovals to fit neatly and comfortably into my palm, and each has a
variation on the brownish/tan theme that is a hallmark of any handmade
goat milk soap. Bars are individually wrapped in white tissue paper,
gathered at the center and topped with a label containing the name of the
soap and the ingredients. But the best part about these bars is simply the
smooth, luxurious feeling of the lather and the gentle aromas lent by the
wonderful essential oils used in the delicious bars I tried.
Myrrh - Great for the season, this bar is warm and exotic. Slightly
smoky, intoxicating, and romantic. A "must" for the holidays,
they also carry a frankincense bar which together make the perfect
Christmas gift.
Stress Relief - This soap is a popular
blend of Eucalyptus
with peppermint and spearmint added
to increase mental alertness and reduce
fatigue
It has an uplifting and soothing aroma at the same time and I like to
close my eyes and inhale deeply while using it because the effect is
calming -- it seems to clear my lungs somehow. A variety of other aromas,
including mandarin (my favorite citrus oil!), clove and pine.
Baby Me - There's something about the richness of buttermilk that
adds a denseness and texture to soap that nothing else does. This
unscented bar is made even more rich due to the addition of cocoa butter.
It feels wonderfully soft and the lather is creamy and frothy. While this
bar is unscented, the buttermilk does provide a rich density to this bar
which I can swear is perceptible through a tiny bit of scent.
You can find all of these soaps and so many more (gingerbread, plum spice,
honeysuckle, Oat-n-Honey, sweetgrass, grapefruit & sage and more) at
Alabu's easy to navigate website.
