2. The Handmade Beauty Banquet: A Fun Success!
What
fun we had at the Handmade Beauty Banquet! We enjoyed lots of handmade
beauty banter and got a chance to hear from some experts in the industry!
Kayla Fioravanti from event co-sponsor Essential
Wholesale talked at length about how using base products to supplement
your handmade line can help your business become more profitable. She talked
about cost related issues, formulation details, trends in "natural'
hair care and more. Gay Timmons of Oh,
Oh Organic detailed updates from the booming world of organics and Laura
Craig of von Natur
shared how essential oils penetrate the skin and how they can and should be
used in handmade skincare products.

6. Handmade Beauty Product Review:
Cupcake Chocolate Scented Mask
by Lush
Cupcake Chocolate Scented Mask
$16.50 | 3.5 ounces
I am not a huge chocolate fan, though I confess to eating far too many
chocolate brownies whenever the holidays roll around. (Guess I'd better
start saving up some tummy space now seeing as it's already mid-September!)
And if I was hungry for a chocolate brownie now, I'd be tempted to reach for
some of this Cupcake Mask in my refrigerator. After all, it's really thick
and has the texture of a soft brownie - and smells good enough to eat!
Other than being a little on the thick side (I suggest letting it get
to room temperature before using it so it spreads more easily on the skin), this stuff is
great! It's got cocoa powder and rhassoul clay plus mint oil (making it
great for oily skin like mine) and vanilla absolute making it warm and
richly scented. A few "perfumey" notes are added so it doesn't
smell JUST like chocolate. I'd call it chocolate perfume.
As you can see from the photo above, my daughter and I loved it! We had a
face party with it one afternoon not too long ago, and in walked Daddy with the camera. Just
in time
to show you how much fun this product can be
when it's shared with a friend. The label says it should be used within 3
weeks of purchase. The label also recommends that it be used to soften
razor stubble before shaving. I'd try that on my legs, but we used it all up
on for our mug shots!
You can get this and lots of other freshly
made cosmetics at HBN member Lush.
Remember that since many of their products are perishable or melt easily,
all of them may not be available for purchase during certain times of the
year.
7. Feature Article: Herbs For Beauty!
Herbs
have a long history of providing multiple skincare benefits, and there is no
end to the different ways in which they can be used in handmade beauty
products. For example, chamomile tea bags applied to the eyelids will soothe
and relax, while a massage oil infused with plantain, calendula and
chickweed will help heal dry skin conditions. I prefer to use fresh plant
materials when possible, but dried plans are often more readily available.
Here are some of my favorite herbs to use in handmade beauty goodies.
° Calendula (Calendula officinalis) - use the flowers, which are
antiseptic, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, healing and soothing for dry and
stressed skin including, for breastfeeding moms, sore nipples.
° Chickweed (Stellarioa media) - use the aerial parts to relieve
eczema, rashes and itchy skin conditions.
° Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) - good for wound healing' in
folklore, it is called "knitbone" for its apparent ability to
hasten the healing of broken bones and sprains. This oil should be handled
with extra care; it can be poisonous if ingested.
° Ginseng (Panax ginseng) - the root is useful in combating
wrinkles and the visible effects of aging skin. It is reputed to enhance
cellular function and lengthen the life span of cells.
° Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) - the leaves of the South African
"red bush" are very soothing to the skin, especially for dryness
and eczema.
° Plantain (Plantago major) - the leaf speeds healing of
burns and wounds. it is also helpful for insect bites, blisters and other
topical skin irritations.
° St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) - the oil extracted (usually by
prolonged soaking in olive oil) from the flowers and sometimes leaves of
this herb is anti-inflammatory, mainly because of the presence of hypericum.
It soothes many muscles and tendon ailments and makes an excellent healing
agent for bruises, burns, mild wounds and hemorrhoids. Because its color
imparts a red color to any oil in which it is infused, it may lend a
slightly pinkish tint to finished products. This make sit a nice way to get
some natural color.
This is excerpted from my book, "Making Aromatherapy Creams &
Lotions," available here.
The book contains instructions for making herbal infusions. You can also get
some instructions at MakeYourCosmetics.com.
8. Handmade Beauty Humor: Tongue In Cheek At
MakeYourCosmetics.com
MakeYourCosmetics.com
is 4 years old and now houses nearly 300
recipes. If you subscribe to this newsletter or visit the site regularly,
you know that several recipes are added each month. What you don't know is
that most of the world doesn't have a clue about making their own cosmetics
(how could that be??!) and they like to poke fun at people who do. Since I'm
a firm believer in not taking one's self too seriously, I have saved up a
few of the funniest submissions so I could share them with you. Get ready to
smile!!
°
Does your face have unwanted bumps? Would you like to get rid of those
blemishes once and for all? Here's a recipe called Rid Of Bumps. The
sole ingredient is toilet paper and the directions are: Take two squares of
toilet (spelled "towlet" in the recipe submission) paper and rub them on your face for two minutes.
Repeat 1 time every week until bumps are gone.
°
Do you need to add some color to your lips? Pucker up for this recipe for
Kool Aid Lip Lavish. All you need is 2 tablespoons of vegetable
shortening and 1/2 packet of Kool Aid drink mix. Stir everything together
and voilá! Your own tasty lip treat. (If I were making this one, I'd be
sure to use blue or purple mix!)
PS - My apologies to readers who might have submitted any of these
recipes and not been joking. I hope you too find joy in laughing at
ourselves!
Best & Success!!
