1. HBN Member Update: Products Liability
Insurance Is Here!
In Case You Were
Sleeping ...
After
months of searching and negotiating, I am pleased to announce HBN's Products
Liability Insurance Program! This exciting new program fills the gap for
members who gross more than $5,000 a year (and thus do not qualify for
insurance with RLI Corp.), and those who have grown quite large and have
extremely significant insurance needs. It's attractive coverage at a
discount price, brought to you by Colony Insurance Group, an A rated
carrier, offering a substantial discount due to the expected volume
purchases by HBN members and members of the Handcrafted Soap Maker's Guild.
Thanks to everyone, members and non-members alike who helped set up this
program by helping me source and talk with various different insurance
carriers and brokers. Special thanks to my friend and colleague Marie Gale
of Chandler's Soaps
who worked tirelessly with Soap
Guild board members and me to hammer out the details of a final
agreement.
Now, you can now join HBN
and get the coverage you need to protect your business -- all with one easy
step! Here's a coverage overview:
$1,000,000 annual general
aggregate coverage
$1,000,000 products liability coverage
$1,000,000 advertising injury coverage
$100,000 coverage for damages to rented premises
$5,000 medical expense coverage
And there's a lot more,
including some "floating" coverage to protect your property when
you are exhibiting at a trade show, doing a craft show or selling your
products on consignment at a boutique! The coverage is extremely
competitively priced, and you get it (and all the other great HBN member
benefits!) immediately when you join HBN!
Since making the
announcement Friday morning, HBN has been deluged with emails and phone
calls. Many people have some of the same questions and concerns so we
assembled the most frequently asked questions at our FAQ.
While you're there, you'll also enjoy a short overview of the history of the
products liability insurance issue in the handmade beauty industry. Please refer there
if you have any questions and if your question is not answered there, or you
have any concern or issue to express, please feel free to email
HBN.

3. Handmade Beauty Trivia Question:
the winner of last week's contest was Jennifer Thompson of Des Moines, Iowa.
Jennifer won a bar of soap, courtesy of BloomWorks
Natural Soap Co., an HBN member since January 2006!
Last Week's Question: Sony Style stores waft a customized
"signature" aroma throughout its retail stores in order to promote
an appealing, soothing, comfortable atmosphere for shoppers. The theory is
that if shoppers feel comfortable in the environment where home electronics
are displayed for sale, they will be more likely to buy them. To win this
week, state the two main scents that are included in Sony's signature scent.
Last Week's Answer: mandarin orange and vanilla. Read more about
it here.
This Week's Question: In 1999, the FDA approved a drug to treat uncontrolled blinking and
crossed eyes. Three years later, it approved the same concoction to help
decrease the appearance of wrinkles and lines between the eye brows. What is
the trade name of the product?
Be the first to answer and win something delicious!
Please read the contest rules here
before submitting your entry. Put "TRIVIA CONTEST ANSWER" in the
subject line or your answer will not be considered. While time does not
permit me to respond personally to all entrants, the winner's name will be
announced in the next newsletter!

4. Feature Article: We Must Honor Them --
And Live
One
of my earliest memories is sitting on the living room floor one afternoon as
my babysitter cried her eyes out. I didn't understand what had upset her, but
I was keenly aware that it had nothing to do with me. And she wasn't just
crying. She was wailing as she watched television. I remember very little,
except a rectangular shaped box, lots of American flags and lots of other
people wailing. It was the funeral of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the
images and sounds of it are seared into my brain.
Yes, terrorism comes in many forms, and the memory of that event was not so very
different from the way the images of 5 years ago today are
melded into my psyche. I was 8 months pregnant with my first child working
feverishly to clean up my home office and paperwork before she was born. My
husband was in the next room watching a morning television show when he called
my name like he had done thousands of times before -- or maybe not. This time, his voice
made a sound I had not heard before and have never heard again. It was the
sound of uncertainty -- a question mark -- like perhaps there was some doubt
that I would ever answer him.
My response was of course immediate, and what I saw when I joined him in
our family room was
just terrifying. I knew it was true, but I still couldn't believe it. The
images and sounds searing into my brain as they did so many years before. We
sat there for the next many hours holding each other, crying and praying that
the world would not end. At least not yet. Not like that. I'm sure you can remember exactly
where you were and what you were doing as well. These many years later, we
still cry and pray, and we wonder how the state of world affairs and religions
could have deteriorated to the point where one man could inspire thousands to
kill others as they also killed themselves.
I am reminded of the times I have watched the local evening news and heard
a report of some terrible crime happening in a neighborhood much like yours or
mine. The reporter always finds some resident who will say, "This is a
safe neighborhood. Things like that just don't happen here." My husband
and I look at each other and wonder when that person will wake up to he fact
that if it happens anywhere, it can happen here. It can. And is has. And my
suspicion is that it will again.
And yet ...
Terror will not stop us from living our lives according to our consciences,
wringing out as much joy and delight as possible. We will mourn
the victims. We will mourn an America where "things like that don't
happen," if there ever was such a place. But the mourning will last but a
moment and then we will quickly turn our attention to the people who looked terror in the face -- and survived.
A moment of silence.
Enough.
They died.
We must honor them -- and live.
