DONNA MARIA SHARES SECRETS OF MAKING CUSTOMIZED BEAUTY PRODUCTS, USING AROMATIC OILS IN HANDMADE SKIN CARE PRODUCTS

July 2, 2000—Washington, DC—A book by aromatherapist, attorney and writer Donna Maria Coles Johnson titled “Making Aromatherapy Creams & Lotions: 101 Natural Formulas To Revitalize & Nourish Your Skin," is being published this month by Storey Books. The book draws on Donna Maria’s wealth of experience in the handmade cosmetics field, including several years at her retail store, Maria Grace Aromatherapy Shop, where she customized products for clients according to their personal preferences and skin types.

The book addresses several topics, including creating body lotions and creams, choosing essential oils to complement different skin types and how essential oils are extracted from plant materials. The book also includes a group of recipes using fresh fruits, vegetables and grains to create Donna Maria’s signature “Aromatic Beauty Food”.

"Consumer interest in handmade beauty products is on the rise, making this book especially pertinent," said Donna Maria. "People want to make their own skin care products using fresh, natural ingredients. They are discovering that handmade toiletries offer several unique benefits, are surprisingly easy to make and contain far less synthetic chemicals than are employed in most cosmetics."

Donna Maria is the founder and president of The Handmade Beauty Network, an organization formed earlier this year to advise the handmade toiletries industry on issues of consumer education, public relations and marketing. She has written extensively on the handmade cosmetics industry, and is the author of several self-published books. Her articles appear in international publications such as The Saponifier, The Aromatic Thymes and The Natural Foods Merchandiser.

Donna Maria has taught handmade beauty workshops throughout the country and in South Africa. Her upcoming speaking engagements include EX*TRACTS (in September), one of the industry’s leading aromatherapy, fragrance and personal care trade shows, and the Annual Conference and Trade Show of The National Association for Holisitic Aromatherapy (in October).
